Electronic Toy vs. The Rugby Pitch: Finding the Balance for Our Keiki

At Poly United Rugby, our mission has always been to get our youth—our keiki—active, engaged, and grounded in the values of teamwork and respect. In today’s digital world, we know that every household has at least one Electronic Toy or gaming device competing for a child's attention. While these gadgets offer entertainment, the real growth happens on the field at Buddy Perry Field.

The Shift from Screen to Scrum It is no secret that an Electronic Toy can keep a child occupied for hours, but it cannot teach the camaraderie of a rugby 7s match or the discipline of a Wednesday afternoon practice. We believe in "Active Play" over "Passive Play." While a high-tech Electronic Toy might improve hand-eye coordination in a virtual world, rugby improves physical resilience, social confidence, and a sense of belonging in the real world.

Balancing Technology and Tradition We aren't saying technology is the enemy. In fact, many families use an Electronic Toy as a reward for hard work at school or a great performance on the pitch. However, the Polynesian spirit thrives on connection—to the land, to our ancestors, and to each other. You can't tackle a screen, and you can't build a lifelong brotherhood through a plastic remote.

Join the PUR Family As we look toward our upcoming season registration, we encourage parents to trade the sedentary lifestyle for the drawstring bag and practice jersey. Let’s ensure our children are known for their strength on the field, not just their high scores on an Electronic Toy.

Come visit us this Wednesday and see how we’re growing grassroots rugby, one rugger at a time!
